Romancing Some Rock by Edie Skye

A Titan Mage Story

Orion Havoc sat on his hotel room balcony with beer in hand, swim trunks on butt, and eyes sharp on the vista below. Palm trees and pristine, white sand stretched from the elaborate pool yard of his lodgings into an infinite star-speckled ocean illuminated by the Crystal Moon hanging above. That flawless white celestial body was close and bright enough to be visible even during the day; night made it absolutely radiant, and the sand glowed under its light as if the entire beach was a place of cosmic mystery, or at least ethereal peace.

The light ocean wind rustled the palms, tempting him to fall asleep.

Instead, he took another swig from his bottle.

He knew the true nature of this peace.

That was why he’d come here in the first place.

The glass door behind him slid open, and his roommate wheeled onto the balcony.

The two couldn’t have looked more different, but then, titan mages and their engineers usually did. Sevas Lazare sat ramrod straight in his customized wheelchair. While the constant use of his arms had put lean tone on those muscles, the structure beneath them was slight, his skin pale enough to blend in with the sand below, and his expression one that barely showed patience for himself, much less other people—unless those people were Rion, or their objective.

Rion reclined in his chair with a dark bulk that might turn that chair into a lethal weapon at any moment, and flowing black hair that meant he would probably be doing so in defense of a swooning lady.

“What are you doing, still up at this hour?” Sevas grumped.

“Looking for trouble.”

“No leads yet?”

“None,” Rion replied, then caught sight of the brilliant blue glass perched on Sevas’ attached swivel desk. “I know why I’m up, but why are you drinking at three in the morning?”

“The bar’s open, and I couldn’t sleep.”

“Legs again?”

“Legs always. Fortunately, tonight’s not bad enough to require more than alcohol, and I do like whatever this mermaid thing is.” He nibbled some blue-dyed sugar off the rim of his glass. “You should sleep, though, so you can wake up early for tomorrow’s bounty pool. The best ones are taken at dawn, and you’re not going to find any work at this hour.”

“On the contrary, this is the best hour to find work! Momma always said, nothing good happens after midnight, and even less good happens at the witching hour. And this beach, at this hour, is where I’ve landed sixty percent of our jobs.”

“You did the math?”

“Well, no, but it feels right. Other than bounties, we’ve taken nineteen jobs since graduation, and eleven of them have come from here.
